Tourism can be defined as an activity when people cross the border from where they live for leisure, business, religion, education etc for a stay of at least twenty-four hours or more( Mill and Morrison,1985: xvii). The concept nature of tourism has resulted in many and varied interpretations, evidencing its complexity and importance (Lizaso-Urrutia, 1993:3)
Tourism can be affected in many different ways, for example recently (2011/9) a couple on holiday in Kenya were kidnapped in the coastal region of Kenya, the husband was killed the and wife kidnapped, this kind of insecurity may cause a tourist thinking to visit the affected area think again.
Africa as a whole is know for its tourism especially the safaris which can be found in almost the whole continent and with arising issues of kidnappings by the Somali pirates, it affects the tourists flow and decline country economy.
We all know people travel for different reasons, (Butler 1980) states that different stages of continuous tourism change can be captured by the tourism area life cycle. tourism and sex trade has been discussed by a number of people, where some says tourism is prostitution, in away it is the reason being that the poor countries are chosen as tourism destinations, where poor girls/ women are paid to have sex with rich/ tourist men in order to earn a living. for example i was born and raised in Kenya and to be honest before i came to the U.K (1999..) i worked in a five star hotel, only the expensive prostitutes would afford to come and buy a drink, sit and wait for a tourist to come along, i had friend and up to today some benefited from it and know live in different parts of Europe and America, however some died due to illness/ diseases due to there engagement with unprotected sex and sleeping with different men.(2010) i went back after 10years this was not the case i was shocked, My friend who works in a tour firm indicated that tourism has gone down in Kenya due to a survey carried out recently on the number of infected men and women with the virus H.I.V and aids.
Another issue surrounding the industry is the environmental issues, for centuries the agricultural `community` and farmers enjoyed being the owners of the countrysides, however this has changed due to the fact that they are offered large amount of money to sell there land in development of tourism destination and resorts. Tourism is also seen as pollution especially in poor countries for example a program call ( Holiday Hijack) aired a footage where by lands are grabbed for holiday destination, the amount of rubbish the tourist create during there stay in later thrown in the estates/slums where the host live, like in the beaches the host cannot the beach as it is small as the rest is for tourists and the sage continues,
I welcome comments relating to the above issues. thanks
